About Us

At the launch of the Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona Professorial Chair in Governance at the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) held in Lagos on Thursday 10 March 2016, the University availed itself the opportunity to state that: “OOU seeks to give useful learning to its students who will be encouraged to cultivate a world view that facilitates not only the continuous pursuit of academic and moral excellence but also developing their expertise and competence in reducing the quagmire of society’s disease, ignorance and squalor”. The University, it continued, “…shall therefore be rooted in its community and act, at all times, as a beacon and symbol of the spirit of the community (local and national), guardian of its moral and formulator of its hopes and aspirations. Accordingly, it shall cultivate a distinct tradition and character that reflect those essential values and nuances that give the host and national communities their distinctive flavour and identity”.

The opportunity for the realization of aspects of this statement came on 8 July 2018 during the 2nd Distinguished Governance Lecture of the Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona Professorial Chair in Governance, entitled, Governance, Citizenship and the Nigerian State, delivered by the Nigerian-born and globally acclaimed scholar, Professor Toyin Falola, at the famous OGD Hall of the University. It was at the lecture venue that the Guest Lecturer suggested the idea of developing curricular toward the conferment of diploma and degrees in governance to the University. The Department of Political Science took up the challenge and sent a Draft Working Document to him on 2nd August, 2019 and to the University as well. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. G.O. Olatunde, thereafter called a meeting for its presentation and consequently directed its revision and harmonization with the Department of Public Administration, Faculty of Administration and Management Sciences. On 27 August 2020, a Memorandum of Understanding was agreed upon and signed between the University and the Donor of the Endowment Chair in Governance, Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebu Land. The Memorandum, among other contents, provided for the establishment of an Institute to be named Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona Institute for Governance Studies, at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye.

The University’s Senate approved the establishment of the Institute on 9 June 2021. Thereafter, following a Resource Verification exercise by a team from the National Universities Commission (NUC) in January 2022, the degree-awarding programmes of Master of Science in Governance Studies (Academic), Master of Science in Governance Studies (Professional) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Governance Studies were approved on 15 March 2022 for the Department of Political Science. The Department will collaborate with and benefit from resource support from the Institute.
