Welcome Adresss by the Director-General
On behalf of the Management and Staff of The Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona Institute for Governance Studies, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Nigeria, I am very pleased to welcome you to our website.
The Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona Institute for Governance Studies (OSKAIGS) came into being in August 2020 as a collaborative platform between Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye and His Imperial Majesty, Oba (Dr) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, Ogagba II, the Awujale and paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, for the advancement of good governance in Nigeria and Africa. The Institute aspires to be a centre for enhancing knowledge and practice of good governance in Nigeria in particular and in Sub Saharan Africa in general.
We are committed to the mandate of the Institute which encompasses teaching/training, research and public engagement and community service tailored toward the enhancement and promotion its core mandate. The teaching/training programmes are organized through workshops, seminars, conferences, short term Executive Courses in various dimensions of governance as well as postgraduate diploma and degree-awarding academic and professional programmes aimed at equipping participants and learners from the public and private sectors as well as non-profiting organisations with the requisite skills and knowledge for the re-invention and transformation of governance for the well-being of contemporary society.
The Institute focuses its research activities on the various dimensions of governance with a view to producing cutting edge knowledge on the effectiveness of state, and addressing the challenges to good governance at local, national, regional and global levels. The commitment to research reflects in its annual PhD Thesis Grants competition programme for graduate students researching into governance-related topics in any discipline sub–Saharan Africa.
In terms of public engagement and community service, our activities are in the realm of systems advocacy premised on the belief that effective governance requires among other things the participation of the citizens in decision-making process, responsiveness of leaders to people’s need, openness, due process and promotion of social inclusion. Our advocacy programmes, partnership with leaders are led alike on the requirements for rules-based, experience-driven and progress-inducing education for good governance.
