Olabisi Onabanjo University was established in July 1982 for the purpose of providing higher education in the Humanities, Sciences and Technology and encouraging the advancement of learning in all the major spheres of human endeavour. The vision of the university is to emerge as a leading global centre of academic excellence where knowledge, skills and values will be pursued relentlessly to ensure the flowering of human abilities, service to the Nigerian nation and the world at large in the wider context of traditional wisdom and culture. The University is naturally endowed with a serene environment conducive to learning and research. Generally, we offer students and stakeholders an uncommon and memorable learning experience.

The establishment of the Oba (Dr) Sikiru Kayode Institute for Governance Studies is without doubt one of the developments through which the University is pursuing and promoting the ideals of its founding fathers. The Institute grew out of an innovative collaboration between the University and Alaiyeluwa Oba (Dr). Sikiru Kayode Adetona, Ogbagba II, The Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland for the advancement of governance. The permanent site of the Institute is located along Road 9 on the Main Campus of the University at Ago-Iwoye. Its mandate revolves around teaching, training, research and public engagement directed at addressing distorted and dysfunctional patterns of governance in Nigeria, sub- Saharan Africa, and the world at large.

The Institute is committed to creatively approaching governance matters from a distinctively inclusive and comprehensive perspective capable of leading to the formulation and development of practical solutions to our contemporary development, public and general management reforms, and fashioning of a functional balance between traditional and contemporary governance structures, precesses and values, among others. Its short courses, academic as well as professional programmes, research and interventions focus on the current challenges and opportunities relating to such matters as public and cyber security and order, e-governance, environmental governance and sustainable administrative systems, gender, youth and empowerment initiatives, private and public sector productivity, climate change, ethical re-orientation and institutional re-engineering.

The management team of the Institute is led by a distinguished Professor of Political Science and supported by a cream of refined and established scholars. The resource persons for the various programmes are experienced faculty members, academics from other universities and outside Nigeria, including the diaspora, as well as professionals from outside the University system who have cut a niche for themselves in their various fields of human endeavour.

The university will continue to appreciate the ingenuity of the Founder of the Institute, Alaiyeluwa Oba (Dr) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, for having the uncommon dreams and determination to transform governance in Nigeria and beyond. Alaiyeluwa Oba (Dr) Sikiru Kayode Adetona has shown great concern for the promotion of good governance and consistently condemned the distorted pattern of governance that has robbed the Nigerian State of its developmental and democratic potentials. I have no doubt that, with the support of the University, the Institute will vigorously work toward the reinvention of governance for the benefit of humanity.
